I was going to take the today off...it is that day of the year when my year officially starts over. But even though the day is not halfway through, I have to take the time to thank everyone for their sweet birthday wishes. There is nothing nicer than turning on your computer and having birthday wishes greet you in the morning, so to all of my friends who were there to wish me well at the crack of dawn this morning...thanks...and also:
1)Thanks to Little One who made me a card that thanked me for everything and said "You are really not that old"...
2)Thanks to The Boy who muttered "Happy Bday mom" before he even rose from the bed.
3) Thanks to Big Sis, who not only called first thing, but spreads the word to everyone she knows so that I get many happy wishes...
4) Thanks to the SIL who leaves terrific phone messages...
5)Thanks to The Senior who REMEMBERED!
6)Thanks to all of my facebook family who filled my page with good wishes...
7)Thanks to the Brother-in-law who withheld the sarcasm for the day ...
8)Thanks to my brothers who always remember....
9)And last, but not least, thanks to The Husband who pays attention, is full of wonderful surprises, and unlike the title...never forgets...
So that's it for this morning...only halfway through the day and so much to be thankful for...and like Abraham Lincoln said, 'It's not the years in life that count, but the life in the years"....
Until next week, when I will be older but wiser....

Happy Birthday to The Boy
Where does the time go? One day you are craving Mexican food in your sixth month of pregnancy, and the next thing you know, your son is turning 12. In what has become a sort of annual event, The Husband has taken the day off, and he will take The Boy and a few friends on a fun-filled day of sports, swimming and eating. Mom is not really included in all of this, and has been asked to remain on the periphery for the day.
When I woke him up this morning, he was all smiles and jokes, reveling in the fact that this is HIS day...and mom is not around to edit or discipline. I would be happy if I were him too, because you know, even I get fed up with myself at times when I here the words "No more cokes" or "It's time for bed" or even "Turn that channel"coming out of my mouth. Being mom is a real pain at times...so even I am glad to have the day off. Little One is spending the night at the BFF house so she will not be "in the way"...so as it turns out, I am semi-free for the day....except to do stuff like find tennis shoes, retrieve sunscreen, set up sleeping bags, pick up the cake, etc.....
In an extremely enlightening discussion yesterday, The Boy, The Little One and the BFF had a discussion as we were driving down the street, on what careers they would pursue as adults. BFF told the Little One that they needed to be professional tennis players, as she had heard that if you decide to be one, you go to this place in England, sign up, and immediately receive one million dollars. Now the Little One agreed that she would do this in order to be "rich", but that she was going to also follow her dream of being an "animal helper". We have never really determined the specificity of this career. We only know that is is not a vet, as that is too yucky. It has more to do with rescuing and grooming....but she also claims that it is highly paid.....Now the BFF, in addition to being a tennis player, also wants to be a doctor, and possibly help Little One at her "animal place". ...I was so impressed by their ambition. Then The Boy, with all of his 12 years of knowledge, informed them that as an MLB player, he was going to make about "130 million". This seemed to stop all conversation...and Little One and BFF looked at him with a new-found respect, oohing and ahhing over his value. They did however agree that "The Queen still makes more than that"....???? Little One said, "But are there still Queens?" And BFF answered, "I think in England". ...so it was all solved. The Boy of course looked over at me and rolled his eyes...because everyone knows the Queen could never make more than 130 million...
And so today, I will marvel at the fact that my little boy is 12, enjoy a break from being "mom", and look forward to the day that I can watch The Boy play for the Braves...and relax, secure in the knowledge that he will be making 130 million , and well able to take care of the rest of us...
So until tomorrow, when my kids will be older...and I will hopefully be wiser...and I might also head to England to become a professional tennis player and collect my million dollars...

Happy Birthday to Little One
It was a fun weekend. The Boy had a baseball travel tournament in Cherokee, North Carolina. These are always fun, but this one was especially great since we won all four games and the tournament.
When I was a little girl, my 3 brothers played baseball and my dad was the coach. This meant that when I was not practicing for the swim team or swimming at a meet, I was at the ball park. These are such good memories for me. I would sit in the dug out and keep score for my dad. Most of the time, I had a crush on one of the players, especially as I got older. Of course they never knew it, as I probably didn't say 5 words all season. But that didn't stop me from loving every minute of it.
Big Sister asked me last night if I get tired sometimes of all of The Boy's baseball. The last few months have been consumed with ball, and when All Stars begin next week, it will continue. I explained to her that I don't at all. It brings back those good feelings of when I was a little girl. I like being at the park. These days, we have a really nice group of parents who have become friends over the course of the season. A couple of the moms have become my really good friends, and I am so thankful for that at a point in life when you don't expect to make new friends as much anymore(especially me, who it takes a while to bond with).
We generally stay at a mediocre hotel and eat lots of junky food all weekend, but the boys have a blast, the little sisters wear their "baseball sisters" t-shirts and cheer....and the parents hoot and holler and behave in altogether embarrassing, but fun ways...
On another subject, today is the Little One's birthday. She will be 10 years old this afternoon around 2:00. I was thinking last night that maybe 10 years old is the cut-off for being called the Little One...but I have decided that in an effort not to break my heart, I will extend that age until 12 years old....so Happy Birthday to the Little One, who will have her best friend over to spend the night. They will skate on the driveway since she is getting new in-line skates...they will watch videos until late...and they will eat a gorgeous chocolate cake with a purple and yellow kitten in icing....the perfect 10 year old day....
And one more random, yet important subject...the Big Sister has become a jewelry-maker. She has started a little business on www.thelittlejewelrybox.blogspot.com. Her designs are really creative and unique...not to mention reasonably priced. I have already received many compliments on the earrings and necklace she made for me. If you go to her site and buy something, please let her know you heard it here....and maybe she will give me a discount on my next purchase...
So until tomorrow, when the Little One will not be so little any more...
